It's sort of like, A Trial By Ordeal (a process of ascension)
There are over three hundred ascending stages of belief through proof¹ involved in the forty-days/temptation-test². It is administered by a Godlike being of incredible power, intelligence, and a sense of humor.

 

[1] How do you convince a well grounded person that they are the most impossible thing that there ever could be?

[2] It's not a test nor could anyone ever fail it. I simply feared not, tried to do the right thing, and fought on. I didn't make the association with the Bible's forty-days until well after it was over. This happens in every incarnation.
