Axis: Bold as Love

The Jimi Hendrix Experience's second 1967 album, Axis: Bold as Love continued the style established by Are You Experienced, but showcased a profound sense of melody as well as his well-known technical virtuosity with tracks such as "Little Wing" and "If 6 Was 9." The opening track "EXP" featured a stereo effect in which a ruckus of sound emanating from Jimi's guitar appeared to revolve around the listener, fading out into the distance from the right channel, then returning in on the left.

On October 31, 1967, when Jimi, Chandler and Kramer had spent a very long time mixing Axis Bold As Love, Jimi Hendrix took the tapes with him on a party. When he came back, he had left the A side in a taxi. Having this being a little inconvenient, as the album Axis Bold As Love was already scheduled for release, they sent Noel out to look in every taxi in town while Jimi, Chas and Eddie started to mix it all over again, all in eleven hours. On If 6 Was 9, they had to use an old tape of Noel's, that was so destroyed they had to iron it before running it through the machine. With the release deadline looming, Hendrix, Chandler and engineer Eddie Kramer remixed the missing side from the multi tracks in an all-night session.
